The new home of the College of Arts & Sciences boasts an observatory on its roof that houses an lsls Ritchey-Chretien telescope, along with six smaller telescopes. It also includes a helistat, vacuum chambers, laser labs and a wave propagation lab. Classrooms have high definition LEDs LCDs and project screens, annotation displays and distance learning through video conferencing.
The facility effectively uses a hybrid structural system approach of structural steel frames, composite metal deck floor beams and cast-in-place concrete shear walls. A particular challenge was isolating the foundation for the rooftop telescope with extreme limitations for vibration and deflection. The facility also uses the latest advances in digital signage systems to allow the staff to dynamically update department schedules, special functions information, or collect revenue through advertisements.
