The expansion of FCI – Hazelton provides an additional 538,000 square feet of facilities to accommodate up to 1,500 inmates. The newest part of the complex includes six medium-security housing buildings and one maximum-security housing building, along with extensive support facilities.
Security and energy efficiency were key goals in designing the facility, which surpassed the goal of Silver and achieved LEED Gold certification. The building systems were designed to deliver a 30% improvement in the energy consumption compared to a baseline facility. The central energy plant houses two 365-ton water-cooled chillers and three dual-fuel 5,500-MBH flexible-tube boilers for the heating hot water system.
