Advanced communications, anti-terrorism force protection (ATFP) and energy conservation were key elements of the Randall David Shughart Elementary and Middle Schools. The elementary and middle schools are in separate wings and share a common administration area, kitchen and gymnasium.
Energy modeling led to energy savings over ASHRAE 90.1 baseline, including reduction of 74% in heating, 32% in interior lighting and 62% in exterior lighting. Energy-efficient systems include dedicated high-efficiency air-cooled chillers and variable-air-volume air handing systems with energy recovery units. There are also occupancy sensors for the classrooms and individual offices as well as a lighting control system that is integrated with the building automation system.
