Overview
This 54,000-SF project was a two-phase renovation and expansion resulting in a premier teaching and performance center. Phase 1 centered on the renovation of 27,000 SF of existing space including a 350-seat multipurpose auditorium, a new scene shop, recording studio enhancements, and improvements to faculty offices and practice rooms. A Phase 2 expansion provided a new recital hall/choral rehearsal room, a black box theater, a new recording suite, music practice rooms, and an expanded lobby.
As part of the work, a full stagehouse was added above the existing stage. Removing the ceiling and increasing the proscenium height not only accommodated the addition of a fly tower for state-of-the-art theatrical equipment but improved the auditorium’s natural acoustics for music programs.
Flexible acoustic elements in the auditorium and instrumental rehearsal rooms accommodate a variety of academic and collaborative activities. The mechanical systems were carefully designed for low noise as well as minimal energy use.
