Overview
Rapid growth in the Wickham Road area resulted in the need for a new elementary school, which opened for the 2020-2021 school year as the district’s first new elementary school campus in a decade. The school, designed to accommodate up to 970 K-6 students, was fast-tracked and completed construction in one year.
The new school features dedicated STEM and computer labs, a 10,000 square foot covered play area, meets the state-required enhanced security measures with perimeter fencing and single point-of-entry, as well as a dedicated golf cart loop for drop off and pick up to accommodate residents in nearby housing developments.
Features
The design is a re-use of previously completed Brevard elementary schools, however, the prototype was adjusted to provide for robust use of technology in the classrooms. A stand-alone central energy plant provides for the new school. Demand control ventilation assures quality indoor air while also being energy efficient. Energy expenses are reduced through the use of LED lighting fixtures as well as occupancy sensors and daylight controls in areas with abundant natural light.
