How will this change affect your facility?
Currently, business occupancies within a medical or behavioral health facility have been viewed and evaluated under the Environment of Care (EC) chapter of The Joint Commission standards. Under this approach, the level of review has been somewhat limited; under the new requirements, the survey process will be more comprehensive.
The Life Safety standards for business occupancies are different and generally less restrictive than healthcare occupancies. The potential impacts will vary based on when the facility was built or renovated, construction features, fire safety systems, and means of egress arrangements. Therefore, modifications to existing facilities may be needed to keep your facility in compliance.
What do you need to do to be prepared by July 1?
A comprehensive pre-survey assessment is recommended to ensure that your facility will be compliant with the standards and to be proactive in resolving known deficiencies.
