Overview

The Lincoln Memorial Undercroft transformed a previously inaccessible structural space beneath one of the nation’s most iconic monuments into a new visitor experience. Completed as part of the Lincoln Memorial Centennial rehabilitation, the project created an immersive interpretive center featuring exhibit galleries, multimedia displays, a quiet viewing theater, visitor amenities, and support spaces, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the memorial’s history and construction.

TLC provided acoustics consulting throughout design and construction. Our team developed acoustic solutions that balanced the competing demands of active visitor circulation, immersive multimedia exhibits, security screening, and quiet reflection. Particular attention was given to controlling noise transmission between spaces while creating a gradual transition from the active entrance areas into the quieter interpretive exhibits and central viewing theater.

Our services included room acoustics, sound isolation, mechanical systems noise and vibration control, acoustic modeling, and audiovisual systems coordination. We established acoustical design criteria for each program space, developed construction details and specifications, reviewed design documents throughout multiple phases, evaluated contractor submittals, and provided construction administration support to help ensure the completed facility achieved the intended visitor experience while respecting the historic character of the Lincoln Memorial.
