Matthew Mazzotta RISE Sculpture at San Diego Airport (SAN)

Featured on the cover of Modern Steel Construction’s December 2025 issue, RISE is a 21-ft-tall jellyfish-inspired sculpture at San Diego International Airport. Designed to capture the beauty of the purple-striped jellyfish and the colors of San Diego’s sunsets, the piece doubles as both a performance space and a shade structure. One of its non-load-bearing legs curves to form an integrated bench, offering shaded seating for travelers. RISE, made of painted stainless steel and polycarbonate chainmail, was created in collaboration with artist Matthew Mazzotta.
